Tecmo Super Bowl: NCAA 2K27 Edition [Updated 09.09.26]

Tecmo Super Bowl: NCAA 2K27 Edition

The classic NES sports title, updated with 32 NCAA Division One teams from the 2026-27 season! This is a full pass over the whole ROM — every player re-rated from scratch, the rosters current, the intro rebuilt around college teams, and a long list of engine fixes on top. Enjoy this version with the following features:

  • Includes 32 NCAA Division One teams from the 2026-27 season with fully updated rosters.
  • Every player in the game re-rated on one game-wide scale. All 960 slots graded on a single list, best to worst, with the top and bottom locked by hand and everything in between interpolated — so the stars sit where they should and the depth doesn’t get inflated.
  • Ratings built with Hardtype in mind, so the game plays right in COM vs COM, MAN vs COM and skip games, not just against a human.
  • Playbooks edited – Plays moved to different slots, edited running plays, removed ‘bad’ plays. Play names rewritten, and the in-game playbook screen rebuilt to match.
  • 76 hacks in total installed. 76 in the Hardtype version, 56 in Vanilla, 46 in Base.
  • College rules where the game can take them: PAT from the 3, two-point conversion from the 3, kickoff touchbacks at the 25. Overtime is sudden death with no ties, on a real clock.
  • Defensive players are setup for nickel defenses (RILB is the nickel back).
  • Team uniforms edited so home team plays in dark uniform during regular season play & higher seeded teams wear dark home uniforms vs lower seeded teams not on their regular season schedule (Miami, SMU, Clemson and Virginia are always in their dark uniforms due to limitations with the game’s code).
  • Crowd and endzones drawn in the home team’s colors.
  • Sim code updated for more accurate team results, including a fix that had the sim engine reading the wrong man on kick and punt returns.
  • Rushing totals dialled to real college numbers. A full simulated season was run, decoded player by player, and measured against five years of real FBS rushing — then the sim values were re-cut so the leader, the second place and the number of thousand-yard backs all land where the real board sits, in a twelve-game season.
  • Quarterbacks run again. The QB rushing scale was flat across all 32 teams; it now spreads the way it should, so a dual-threat starter shows up on the rushing board and a pocket passer does not.
  • Season calendar fix.
  • 12 game regular season schedule for all 32 NCAA teams.
  • The intro plays from power-on and has been rebuilt around college teams.
  • Each version has its own menu color so you can tell them apart at a glance: Base (blue), Vanilla (green), Hardtype (black).
  • Road-team-as-Player-2 and No Sprite Flicker both ship as optional IPS patches — no fourth ROM to keep track of.

#1 – Base – Hacks Included

1. Automatic touchbacks on kickoffs (ball out at the 25)

2. PAT snapped from the 3 (college rule)

3. Two-point conversion from the 3 (college rule)

4. Overtime is sudden death with no ties, on a real clock — the 99:99 OT clock hack is out and the timeouts clear

5. COM never onside-kicks to open overtime

6. Kick power is a real rating. Field goal distance reads the kicker’s leg instead of a flat constant, and the player card now reads KICK ACCURACY and KICK POWER

7. Every kicker re-rated from EA College Football 27

8. COM knows its own kicker on fourth down — it compares the spot with that kicker’s actual range instead of guessing

9. Defensive pursuit by quickness. Quickness did nothing in the engine; it now sets how long a chasing COM defender holds his line before re-aiming

10. Every defender’s quickness re-rated from EA College Football 27 Pursuit

11. QB, lineman and defender fumble odds at 38

12. FG length max 69 yards

13. Punt length max 75 yards

14. Punt returns roll on the returner’s own ball control

15. Every kick and punt return man at 81 ball control

16. Returner sim fix — kick and punt returns in the sim engine now read the return man himself. 27 of 32 teams were feeding a zero into simulated returns

17. Interception and fumble returns: the ball carrier’s hit power boost removed and his speed boost cut to one notch, so he no longer runs through the whole defense

18. Permanent home/away fix (season and playoff game loading)

19. Expansion-team uniform lookup fix — this is what had Miami and TCU both taking the field in white

20. Crowd changes to the home team’s colors, with matching endzones

21. Crowd color fix for the expansion teams

22. The crowd square near midfield no longer draws on the goal-post palette

23. Midfield emblem

24. Schedule header matched to the rest of the line

25. Conference label off the team data screen

26. Play names rewritten, and the in-game playbook screen rebuilt to match — sixteen of the sixty-four plays had the wrong name on that screen

27. Milestone cutscenes at 100 rushing, 150 receiving and 300 passing

28. No Mighty Bomb Jack halftime — the championship game draws one of the normal halftime shows

29. The intro plays from power-on and is rebuilt around college teams: three player cinemas, the stadium fly-in, the facade boards, a new menu logo, and the NFL shield and old trademark screen gone

30. Title screen carries the roster update date

31. Add ‘Hut’ pre-snap cadence

32. NFC West sim fixes

33. Player 2 condition fix

34. FG avoid kick block fix

35. TE sim fix

36. Changes offensive sim to ‘out of 32’ sum

37. Prevent schedule from being random

38. Fix playoff seeding

39. Wild-card pairing: the best wild card goes to the 3 seed and the 4 hosts the 5

40. C1 playoff block fix — playoff stats stop stepping on the first team’s quarterback

41. More NFL-like QB rating value

42. TEAM ROSTER instead of 1991 ROSTER after the championship end game scene

43. Set Pro Bowl Kick/Punt return men to RB4

44. Pro Bowl playbooks

45. Season calendar fix

46. Menu color: blue

#2 – Vanilla – Hacks Included

Also includes all the Base version hacks.

47. Changing KR speed

48. PR speed change from SS to actual PR player

49. Better INT returns

50. Add stats after quarters

51. QB backpedal animation hack

52. Kickoffs from 8-yard line to 3 deep in endzone

53. Better COM punt timing

54. PA/PC hack – PC is INT and PA is target

55. Overthrow bug fix

56. Menu color: green

#3 – Hardtype – Hacks Included

Also includes all the Vanilla version hacks.

57. Ultra logic hack — the COM changes its defensive calls instead of sitting in one look

58. COM fourth-down logic across the whole field. It decides from the real score, the clock and its own kicker’s leg — protecting a lead late it kicks in range and otherwise punts; trailing late it goes for it from anywhere the kick won’t help. This replaces the old “COM goes for FG with :20 left” and “CPU punts when behind by 15” hacks

59. COM onside kicks by the real score, and never in overtime

60. Late-game play mix: leading under two minutes in the fourth the COM runs 80% of the time, trailing it passes 80%

61. COM QB scrambles by his own pocket rating instead of a flat rate for everybody, and never steps up in the first half-second

62. JStout’s Find Open Receiver, sharpened — with no receiver open the COM QB throws to the least-covered man instead of a blind pick

63. Onside kick recovery for the kicking team, on kickoffs only. Punts, passes and field goals bounce as in vanilla

64. More accurate FGs, with the very best kickers no longer automatic

65. Decrease fumbles to 30%, with nobody fumble-proof

66. Changing the differential for popcorning / DL busting through

67. Punt coverage boost removed

68. Randomize in-game music

69. Timing of snap exchange b/n C & QB

70. Faster handoffs, pitches, snaps & player control

71. QB throws ball instead of taking sack and runs less

72. COM dive tackling like SNES TSB I

73. CPU angles to the sidelines if there’s no defenders in front of them

74. Push/Pull hack

75. Buck’s TSB COM juice setter — the COM plays at the 4-win level from game one, then climbs on vanilla’s curve

76. Menu color: black

Changes from the last release

  • Every player in the game has been re-rated. This is the single biggest change and it touches every team.
  • 108 roster changes from the official 2026 depth charts and rosters, 35 jersey numbers corrected, seven names rewritten where a new player shared a surname with a teammate, and faces set for the new men.
  • Return men set for all 32 teams, every one of them at 81 ball control.
  • The intro is back. The first release skipped it on boot because it was still full of NFL teams; it now runs from power-on, rebuilt around college teams, and Start still skips it at any point.
  • College rules added: PAT from the 3, two-point conversion from the 3.
  • Overtime rebuilt: the 99:99 clock hack is out, the clock and timeouts behave, and the COM no longer onside-kicks to open the period.
  • Kick power and defensive quickness are real ratings now, both re-rated from EA College Football 27.
  • Three sim fixes: the returner-skew fix, return men floored so their returns aren’t dead balls, and the sim values rebuilt for the new roster.
  • Uniform and crowd fixes for the four expansion teams, which is what had Miami and TCU both in white.
  • Road-team-as-Player-2 moved out of the ROMs and into an optional IPS patch, so all three versions are now the same shape.
  • Midfield emblem added — the last release removed the midfield logo outright.

Thanks

This release stands on other people’s work. Names first, then what they did, because “thanks to everyone” pays nobody.

@fatcheerleader — the vanilla version this whole line was built on. Everything above is layered on his work.

@bruddog — the Tecmo Super Bowl disassembly, which very little of this exists without; the overthrow bug fix; and the onside-kick recovery work.

@cx_rom — the 32-team foundation and the expansion-team template this whole ROM is built on, and two-point conversion work.

@BAD-AL — TSB Tool, which this project leans on constantly, and the SET command syntax the hack lists are written in.

@jstout — Find Open Receiver, the PA/PC read, and the color work that keeps turning up underneath other people’s hacks.

@Knobbe — the hacking documentation directory, without which half of this would have been rediscovered the hard way, and the PA/PC read that matched where this build landed independently.

@Suede Wade — the milestone cutscenes and Pro Bowl fix, the two-point conversion patch, and the report that caught the garbled roster title after a championship win.

@COA Elway — the 18-week schedule, a run of bug reports, and the 14-team playoff bracket that turned “is this even possible” into “here is the shape of it.”

@buck — the COM juice setter.

@konForce — kick-return speed.

@Ryzzynnwa — Push/Pull, the intro drawing routine, the ball-carrier bounce effect, and a great deal of the hacking documentation forum generally.

@xplozv — Find Open Receiver for SNES TSB I, and the idea and table behind the defensive quickness work.

@pambazos88 — the intro art — metatiles and palettes — and the insight that they are background metatiles and not sprites, which is what unstuck the intro. He is no longer with us. His notes still work, byte for byte, years later.

@keithisgood — roster and post-career research, and the 32-team base for the original Tecmo Bowl.

@lpotter — updated helmets.

@Jorgasms — the two-point conversion work whose signature is still in the ROM.

SheepdogXIX on X spotted a schedule error that triggered a full audit of all 272 games. He was right, and two of them were wrong.

And everyone at TecmoBowl.org who reports a bug instead of shrugging at it. A report that turns out to be right has value even when the file was already correct — it is a check that got run.
